Research Analyst, Natural Resource Economics

Seeking applicants with a Master's degree in economics or a related field. Research analysts in this practice area conduct research into climate change, sustainability, and natural resource management, and perform economic analyses for proposed environmental and natural resource policies regarding water, forests, fish and wildlife. Responsibilities include phone and internet research, data management, policy and data analysis, and report and proposal preparation. The research analyst position requires strong skills in microeconomics; quantitative and statistical methods, spreadsheets, and databases; written and oral presentation; and literature review and research. The analyst should have experience communicating complex economic concepts in a creative and accessible format. Programmer

We are looking for someone to join our Eugene, Oregon office, who would design and maintain database-integrated web applications, write SQL queries to extract data for statistical analysis, produce code to manipulate and apply complex rules to data, and work with clients to update or add features to web applications. Extensive experience with any particular programming language is not required (varied experience is preferred). The ability to make efficient and effective use of a variety of technologies and to quickly become proficient with new technologies is required. Every project we work on is unique and we work on multiple projects simultaneously. As a result, the work the person in this position does will change from one day to the next.

Key Responsibilities: Design of server-side programs for web applications; Maintaining existing web infrastructure; Adding features, updating code within web applications; Data manipulation, including tabulation, cross-tabulation, conditional tabulation, and calculations; Developing server-side programs for web applications.

Required Qualifications: Good understanding of HTML, CSS, SQL, JavaScript; Good understanding of programming concepts (especially data structures and algorithms) and ability to quickly write small, efficient, understandable, and correct one-off programs; Good understanding of relational databases; The ability to learn quickly; Good verbal communication skills in English.

Useful Additional Skills: Basic *nix system administration; Familiarity with web applications such as Ruby on Rails, Django or Zope; Familiarity with Internet protocols and server-side programming; Familiarity with statistical concepts; Familiarity with economics and business; Representing and using data in XML; Using regular expressions to clean and transform data.
