How ECONorthwest Can Help

Low-income families and people with disabilities have long faced fragmented service and delivery systems as they attempt to meet their basic needs or return to work. At ECONorthwest, we’ve developed a number of web-based tools to help people navigate complex and uncoordinated program rules.

For people with disabilities, we’ve partnered with the World Institute on Disability to develop easy-to-use interactive models that calculate the income available to a disabled individual and his or her family after allowing for essential living expenses and benefits. These models allow recipients of Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), Supplemental Security Income (SSI), or both to estimate the impact of earnings on their cash benefits, health coverage, food stamps, and housing subsidies.

ECONorthwest has a growing list of websites across the country, including Disability Benefits 101 (DB101) sites for:

  • California
  • Michigan
  • Minnesota
  • New Jersey
  • Arizona
  • Missouri

We also designed a site that helps veterans understand their benefit options and eligibility.

Our DB101 work builds on our foundation of internationally acclaimed benefit pre-screeners. Oregon Helps incorporated a flexible design that has allowed us to rapidly and efficiently develop several sister sites: Arizona Self Help, New Jersey Helps, and Los Angeles County Helps are currently in use.

  • Pre-screeners use local program rules and anonymously entered information about family size, income, and housing to evaluate whether users are likely to qualify for assistance from up to 30 programs (e.g., food, health, cash, housing, energy, senior assistance, and tax credits).
  • The site then tells visitors which services they appear to be eligible for and directs them to the closest agency that provides each service.
